Before a concrete floor is painted, polished, or applied with vinyl tiles, it needs to be properly treated and the substrate prepared by levelling it with a concrete diamond grinder. This is a machine designed to fully level uneven floors and smoothen a concrete surface. Floor grinders have horizontal discs with attached diamond grinders that rapidly rotate to buff out rough surfaces and edges in concrete floors.
How to use a concrete diamond grinder for leveling concrete
Preparation
Grinding concrete and stone floors will result in a lot of dust. Prepare protective face masks with dustproof filters. Prepare a dust extractor or industrial vacuum with a HEPA filter. Fill in any deep holes or cracks in the floor using epoxy or mortar crack repair. Allow these to fully dry before grinding. Prepare the floor grinder and read all safety manuals by the manufacturer. If this is your first time handling a floor grinder, make several test runs before doing the actual process.
Using the grinder
Move the grinder across the floor from left to right. This proper side to side movement will eventually level and smoothen the uneven concrete floor. Repeat the process across the entire floor until a smooth and consistent finish is done.
Fully clean out the floor
After the grinding process, remove any excess dust, concrete chippings, and other debris by using the dust extractor or vacuum. Once cleared, go over the floor once more with a broom and dustpan.
